Welcome to Kitten Adoption Information!

The fact that you've found this site probably means you're looking for information about adopting a kitten -- which is certainly the first step to responsible pet ownership.

Too many people treat animals as disposable, and don't realize that an indoor-only cat has an expected lifespan of up to 20 years (sometimes slightly more!).

KittenAdoptionInfo.com has been created to answer questions such as where should you look for a kitten to adopt -- is it better to buy a kitten from a pet shop or visit a humane shelter? Or maybe from a "free to good home" listing? Are there benefits or drawbacks? Does it even matter?

And what about the actual process of choosing a kitten from a litter or from the pound? Can you tell if it's healthy? Maybe it's just scared, and not sick. Can you afford to treat it (veterinarian care is expensive!)

Speaking of expenses: maybe you should consider a slightly older kitten or an adult cat, one that's already been spayed or neutered. Depending on where you live, that one surgery alone can run into the hundreds of dollars, especially for a female kitten. This may also determine how many kittens you'll adopt--littermates make great companions for each other and keep each other company while you're at work all day. But can you carry double the cost? For example, have you thought about how much you'll likely spend every year on food, litter and vet care and boarding fees?

And what about when you go away? When you adopt a kitten, you lose a certain amount of freedom to just get up and go. You need a trustworthy friend to cat sit or have enough money to pay to board your pet.

Have you thought about your compatability with the character of the breed of cat you're bringing into your life? Do you want one that's needy and chatty or would you prefer to have a laid-back ball o fur (which almost anyone will tell you comes in an orange and white tabby package).

Have you really considered whether or not you'll let your cat go outside? Should it be an indoor-only cat or do you want it to experience fresh air and sunshine (but not be killed by a car or threatened by an irate garden-proud neighbor)?

As a cat owner and animal rescue volunteer of many years, I've put together some articles on all aspects of kitten adoption and ownership including solving common problems like peeing outside the litterbox and reducing litterbox odor. I hope you'll find them helpful.

Best of luck in your search for a furry companion!
