Tips to Litter Box Odor Control
To cat owners with sensitive noses, litterbox odor can be a real problem. If you have a
great sense of smell, and have tried the various brands of litter available on the market but
still aren't happy with the results, there are some tips from other cat owners that you may
wish to try:
Baking Soda Inside and Out
Add a box of baking soda to the litter pan to see if that helps absorb some of the odor --
and place an open box of baking soda nearby (like you do in the fridge).
Keep The Litter Box Clean
Clean the box thoroughly every day by scooping all waste into a small plastic bag. Tie
this off and place into a garbage can with a sealed lid. Have baby wipes handy in case
there's any clean-up necessary on the sides of the litter box.
There's an added benefit to daily maintenance in addition to odor control. By keeping the
litter box as clean as possible, you don't have to completely empty it and wash it out very
often (if ever).
Advantages of Covered Litter Boxes
Use covered litter boxes and change the air filters regularly. You can put quite a lot more
litter in covered boxes than in open boxes, and this may help with odor-control, as the cats
can really cover their waste.
What Goes In Comes Out
Many people find that feeding their cats almost all canned food (with dry kibble available
to snack on) actually helps in matters of waste odor. Perhaps it's because much of the dry
food is not digestible (having a high content of cardboard in it) and thus goes right through
the animal's system, while the protein and nutrients in the canned food can be more
efficiently used by the cat.
If you can buy premium food, or make it yourself, do so. You'll notice the difference in the health of your cat as well as in the litter box contents.
